Good News for All Creation – Joint Synod

Resourcing the local church to take action…

7.30pm Tuesday February 6th 2018 – All Souls Church, TW1 1PBHounslow, Hampton & Spelthorne Deanery Synods are delighted to host a joint open meeting to hear from A Rocha. The Christian charity works for the protection and restoration of the natural world as a response to the biblical mandate to care for the earth, and to demonstration the Christian hope for God’s world.

A Rocha’s new CEO Andy Atkins will be speaking about their work: practical involvement in conservation through projects and research; campaigning on biodiversity & also engaging with churches, schools, communities and individuals.

Helen Stephens (until recently Hounslow Deanery Secretary) will also be speaking. She is A Rocha’s new Church Relations Manager and works with local churches particularly as they work towards the Eco Church awards.

The evening will feature time for questions, discussion and the sharing of resources and good practice. We will finish by 9pm.

This Synod meeting is open to all interested church members, not simply Synod Representatives.

Please note that parking is limited around the church. Do aim to come by public transport (St Margarets Station & the H37 bus) or leave extra time to park.

London Diocesan Board for Schools – Deanery representative director

Jan Trellick has been our Deanery representative on the board of directors for Hounslow Deanery Synod for the last six years. New elections are due by the end of the year, so with Jan stepping downb, we will appoint someone to succeed her at our November meeting.

Deanery Synod Workshops

Our Connect Deanery Synod evening (Monday 10th November 2014) will offer six short workshops for participants to choose between:


 

The Church Website – creating, shaping and promoting your church’s online presence

This workshop, let by John Graham, will focus on the visual design aspects of a church website, what it might or should contain and how it can connect with those on the outside of church life considering coming along.


How to walk the talk. The power of joined up communications

Stuart Smith helps us think about how we communicate our church’s message, vision and values to our community and neighbours. He’ll be taking us beyond ‘the website’ to the whole of a church’s image and (you might even say) “brand”.


Beyond Email

A ‘why’ and ‘how’ guide to online collaboration aimed at members of a church team e.g. PCC, Finance. John Farr will take you through some of the opportunities that exist and the rewards gained from sharing information securely online and cover some of the technologies available.


 Administrating a WordPress Site

WordPress is one of the most popular website ‘engines’ on the internet, making possible everything from simple one-page sites to those run by multinational corporations. Many churches use it, partly because it can be made very simple for non-Geeks to edit and create pages for their site. If you already run a site and would like a guided tour of some of the tips and tricks, or have been considering setting one up, Ant Kelly is your man!

Connecting – Synod on 10th November 2014

 

Hounslow Deanery Synod

Monday 10th November 7.30 for 8pm at All Souls Church

This term’s Synod on Monday 10th November will explore the use of technology (especially the internet) by the local church, to connect with congregation and parish.

Programme as follows:

  • Refreshments from 7.30pm
    …”Critique our website” available over coffee from website designers
  • 8pm – Presentation: The Ten Commandments of the internet for churches
  • 8.15 – Workshops: short, practical sessions with experienced speakers, including:·
    • Internet for non-users
    • Improving/planning a church website
    • Does your church have a ‘brand’?
    • Social media for clergy
  • 9pm – Synod Business
  • 9.30 (latest) – Close

This is a session intended for all those interested in the subject (as well as Synod members), so please do forward this to any in your church to whom it is relevant.

If you have a church website, why not take a fresh look at it before you come – there’ll be the chance to have it (positively!) critiqued over coffee before our 8pm start (and to eavesdrop on others doing the same thing!).

All our speakers are professionals involved in working with churches (and other organisations) in helping them make the most of the internet and social media. I’m very grateful for their willingness to be involved – hope you’ll be able to join us in a few days’ time here at All Souls.

Contributors for Synod on the Internet – November 2014

We’re delighted to be welcoming five experienced speakers to help facilitate our workshops for the Synod on 10th November 2014 at All Souls Church.

Here’s a little about them:

John Graham

John GrahamJohn Graham, a member of the PCC at St Michael’s Chiswick (and designer of their website) is Creative Director of ADCreative London:

…a multi-discipline London-based graphic design company established in 1973 with big creative agency backgrounds, global brand identities experience and a crucial mid-size agency advantage. Working internationally and in the UK as a design agency we deliver concept development and creative solutions for commercial problems, specialising in creative design across brand and communications for the likes of Coca-Cola, Dixons Retail Group, Fullers Brewery, Kerry Foods, Warner Bros, and Hayman’s Family Gin Distillers. Our offering spans graphic design across branding and packaging plus in-store brand presentation and B2B communications, connected up with web, digital works and smartphone apps. Predominantly in the Retail/Food/Drinks and Technology/Entertainments industries.

Stuart Smith


Stuart_SmithThe Smithy Creative_RGBStuart has been working in the brand and design industry for over 20 years, for a variety of agencies and clients across numerous sectors. Before starting The Smithy Creative in 2012, Stuart worked at Tearfund, managing the in-house creative team.

Stuart’s work is primarily focused in the charity sector, working with clients such as Open Doors, The Children’s Society, London City Mission, International Citizen Service and Christian Aid in bringing fresh perspectives that deliver bespoke and memorable solutions, time after time.

Stuart lives with his wife Tracy and their two children in Sunbury, and is passionate about helping individuals and organisations become the best they can be. He volunteers with charity East to West mentoring secondary school children, wishes that he was Bradley Wiggins and also plays drums in the church worship band.

John Farr


john_farrJohn is Churchwarden at All Saints Isleworth and in the past held the position of treasurer. It was during John’s role as treasurer that he began transforming the way the church conducted its financial matters, reducing the number of cheques written from hundreds to 2 per year and eventually completing a totally ‘paperless’ year-end in 2013, via an agreement with the firm of accountants. He was also responsible for setting up a cloud system to manage information flow and improve collaboration within the various teams at All Saints.

KB365-LogoHe, together with Jyoti Banerjee under the banner of KiteBlue 365, have since helped a number of churches and charities apply for and receive cloud services free of charge, and assisted them in training and re-designing existing processes enabling organisations to keep their costs low.

John is a strong advocate of collaboration and information sharing, and believes it is key to supporting growth within a church.

John and his wife Rebecca live in Twickenham and is a relatively new dad to two wonderful energetic children – praise God!

Richard Moy


Richard MoyRichard has been Vicar of Christ Church, Turnham Green since 2002. Before that he was in Wolverhampton and is married to Nicola, who is Associate Vicar at Christ Church. They have three young children. He is interested in football, is a former chaplain to Wolves FC , and is a keen user of social media and modern communication, such as blogging and Twitter.

Richard co-authored a Grove Book on Leadership and Social Networking for Grove Books.

Ant Kelly


Ant KellyAnt Kelly has been a member of All Souls since 2006 and helped to migrate the All Souls website from Joomla to WordPress in 2010. Last year he rethemed the website and continues to help maintain it as part of a small team.

Ant has a degree in Graphic Design from Chelsea School of Art and worked as a model maker and set designer in the Animation industry for 12 years before moving into freelance web design. There is nothing he likes more than taking a client’s clunky old website and turning it into a shiny new one, in fact he feels it is his civic duty. He particularly enjoys working with arts organisations and charities, helping them get the most out of their budgets and totally exceeding their expectations.

Ant lives in Isleworth with his wife and two daughters and when not chained to his computer he likes to get out on his trusty bike or indulge in some photography.
